Kim didn’t come home from Maurice’s apartment until early Monday morning before class, so I had the entire weekend to contemplate how I was going to fix the mess that I created last Friday night. When I emerged from my bedroom, Kim was standing in the kitchen drinking a glass of orange juice.

“Good morning.” I approached Kim slowly in case she was still angry with me. I didn’t want to catch a glass of orange juice in the face first thing this morning.

“Hello.” Kim didn’t seem too excited to talk to me.

“Did you enjoy the rest of your weekend?”

“It was okay.” Kim sat her glass on the counter and started to pour a bowl of Cheerios.

“Okay.” I hesitated for a moment. I hated apologizing even when I knew I was wrong. “Look, I just want to say that I’m sorry for what I said to you on Friday night.”

Kim looked up from her bowl of cereal and half smiled. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it.”

“Thanks, I’m really sorry though. I didn’t mean to insult you at the party.”

“What happened that night? You were acting really strange.”

Shit. I didn’t want to get into this, but I had to expect that she would ask questions. “I just had a bad day, that’s all.”

Kim raised one eyebrow. “You’ve had bad days before and never acted out that way. I’m not so sure I believe you.”

“It’s complicated, Kim.”

“Okay, well let’s talk about it.”

I stared at the floor in embarrassment. I was still reeling from what Will did to me Friday night, not even regarding the fact that I had been lying to Kim about dating her friend. “Kim, I promise I will talk to you about it one day. I’m just not ready right now.”

“Well whenever you do decide that you want to talk, I’m here for you.”

“I appreciate that.” I smiled but mostly because I was glad that I had gotten out of that situation. “Are we riding to campus together today because I have to be to work by ten? If I’m late again, Ms. Janet is gonna kill me.”

When I walked into the office, Ms. Janet was perched in her chair wearing a rose pink pantsuit with gold gladiator sandals. I stood over her as I walked into her cubicle and greeted her.

“Hey, my baby! I’m glad you’re here because we have so much work to do. How was your weekend?”

“It was okay. What about yours?” I most certainly didn’t want to discuss the intimate details of how I spent my weekend.

While Ms. Janet divulged the details of her escapades, I couldn’t help but notice that about three weave tracks in the top of her head were waving at me.

I sat my messenger bag down and smiled and nodded while waiting on Ms. Janet to finish her story. When she finished, I placed my hand on her shoulder and prepared to finally confront her about her mismanaged weave.

“Um… Ms. Janet…” I struggled to get the words out.

“Yes, sweetie?” she responded.

“Umm… Here, let me fix this for you.
